By far the biggest name on the market for NFL teams looking for a new head coach is Sean Payton. However, with the regular season being over for nearly a month, Payton has yet to become a coach anywhere as of right now.
It’s no secret that most teams would go all-in to bring Sean Payton in as their next head coach, but each coming day has essentially brought the possibility down to next to nothing. The Carolina Panthers hired Frank Reich. The Houston Texans are reportedly close to landing DeMeco Ryans, and the Arizona Cardinals and Denver Broncos have been back and forth on Payton the entire time.
However, the former New Orleans Saints head coach gave a massive update on Sunday morning that should spark hope in both Arizona and Denver:
Sean Payton confirms that the door is not closed for him coaching next year.
“We could know more next week.”

That’s a big update, although it’s not entirely telling of which teams are still in on Payton. Over the weekend, there was a report of the Broncos eliminating a long list of candidates and visiting Jim Harbaugh in an attempt to pry him away from Michigan. Payton also shut down some Broncos’ displeasure last week.
Sean Payton was as candid as always, but he insists that he should know more in this coming week.
“I think in the next week we’re going to learn a lot more.”
“There are handful of things that are taking place for these coaches (other candidates) and myself.”

Do the Cardinals still want Payton? Most likely. The Broncos more than likely also want Payton, but the price of trading away one or two first-round picks to acquire him from the Saints might scare teams away.
Sean Payton watch is here and it should be coming to an end soon.
