Trent Williams found himself on the receiving end of some major backlash after his penalty-filled start for the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 58 against the Kansas City Chiefs.
In just the second drive of the game, Williams committed two straight penalties that slowed down what could have been a bounce-back run for the 49ers.
Trent Williams Feeling Nervous With San Francisco 49ers
In a span of four minutes in the opening quarter, Williams committed a false start penalty and a holding penalty, the second of which negated an epic Brock Purdy pass to George Kittle that would have gotten them going.
The 49ers really needed a break after they lost the ball in the opening drive when the Chiefs defense forced a Christian McCaffrey fumble. Instead of establishing a rhythm, Williams’ careless mistakes on the biggest stage of all further doomed San Francisco.
Many expected that it would be Purdy who would struggle to start considering that it’s his first Super Bowl as a second-year QB. The veterans were supposed to be the ones to pick up the slack while the young quarterback adjusts, but that was not the case at all.

Naturally, plenty of San Francisco 49ers fans were frustrated and disappointed with how the 49ers started.
Trent Williams got the brunt of the criticisms and insults, especially after his poor performance to start the contest.

It’s certainly a concerning trend for the 49ers. The good news is they still have plenty of time to make up for the mistakes and get back on track to score. Both teams failed to register a point in the first quarter, though for an offensive team like San Francisco, that’s less than ideal.
