It’s a full-circle moment for Christian McCaffrey and the San Francisco 49ers. He managed to reach the Super Bowl in his first full season with the Niners the same way his father did. He’s also playing for a head coach who also has a professional connection with his dad.
Now that he has a chance to win a Super Bowl ring of his own, the 27-year-old running back looks back to this coincidence and what it means to him.
Christian McCaffrey looks at San Francisco 49ers connection as ‘really cool’
During one of Christian McCaffrey’s many interviews on Super Bowl Opening Day, he addressed the connection that he had with Kyle Shanahan and his family. He focused on the coaching side of things and how his head coach helped him improve his game.
“As a football nerd, every time I’m in those meetings, I kind of geek out because you start to understand the things you don’t know,” McCaffrey said. “You realize how important every little detail is, whether you’re motioning, or whether you’re faking, blocking, or getting the ball, whatever it is, there’s a way of doing it. To see it all fit together and to see him explain that is really cool.”
He also shows trust with Shanahan’s play calling. When asked about if he asks for adjustments when opposing defenses figure out his runs, he answered that he doesn’t ask much out of his head coach.
“He’s obviously done it a long time and had a lot of success,” McCaffrey explained. “For me, what feels good is that I completely trust him.”
However, he did admit that he made one request from Shanahan: “It wasn’t really a request, I told him I thought this one play was gonna score. He called it in the second half, and luckily it scored.”
McCaffrey has been phenomenal under Shnahan’s guidance in 2023, finishing the season with 1459 rushing yards and 14 rushing TDs. He also had 564 receiving yards and 7 receiving TDs to his name.
The partnership between Christian McCaffrey and Kyle Shanahan harkens back to the San Francisco 49ers team that won it all in 1994. Mike Shanahan was the offensive coordinator while Ed McCaffrey was a young wideout who was an option for Steve Young.
If they manage to win it all on Sunday, this further cements the bond among the families and the organization.
