The New York Jets thought that a 2023 pre-NFL Draft trade for four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers would put them over the hump and into postseason contention for the first time since 2010. They were wrong. Rodgers was hurt four snaps into Week One and the other additions that they made to appease him did not pan out. While Rodgers’ injury was unfortunate, it did highlight all the other areas on the roster in which New York needed to improve.
Of course, the Jets had a solid. defense last season, ranking third in total yards allowed per game (292.3). Their scoring defense, however, ranked 12th, in the NFL. This was certainly not terrible, but there was also room for improvement.
To help improve their defense, the Jets traded for disgruntled two-time Pro Bowl linebacker Haason Reddick. The implication, of course, was that they would give him the contract extension that he wanted once the trade was complete.
New York Jets Linebacker Haason Reddick Is Holding Out of Training Camp
That contract has not been signed. Reddick has not received an offer from the Jets that he believes is suitable for a player of his talents. As a result, he has decided not to report for training camp.
Per NFL rules, players that hold out from training camp are fined $50,000 per day. Per the agreement in the collective bargaining agreement between NFL owners and the NFL Players Association, this fine cannot be waived by the team.
Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love is also awaiting a new contract extension. Instead of holding out of training camp, though, he reported to the team at Lambeau Field. However, he is not participating in practices until his deal is done.
By “holding in,” Love avoids the $50,000 mandatory daily fine. The Packers could fine him if they wanted to, but they will not.
Reddick not reporting to training camp has triggered the mandatory daily fines. While he hopes that holding out will make him more money, it is actually costing him more money per day than many people make in a year.
The New York Jets’ Stance on the Haason Reddick Holdout Leaked
While the Jets organization has not commented publicly on the Reddick holdout, ESPN reporter Rich Cimini has discovered their stance on the situation, and it does not bode well for Reddick.
Per Cimini, the team “won’t negotiate with a player not in camp.” In other words, no show, no deal.
As fans are aware, the Jets tried to sign Reddick to an extension when they first traded for him. When he rejected it, they took it as a sign of good faith that he would still practice with the team in offseason activities while they worked out a deal.
Unfortunately, that was not the case either.
Reddick forfeited a $250,000 workout bonus by not showing up for OTA’s. He also was fined for not reporting to mandatory minicamp.
At this point, Reddick’s refusal to show up for team activities has cost him close to a half million dollars, and the total will only go up the longer he refuses to report.
