It’s difficult to envision how the Dallas Cowboys’ offseason could have gone much worse.
All-Pro left tackle Tyron Smith is a New York Jet, emergent center Tyler Biadasz is a Washington Commander, while quarterback Dak Prescott, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, and All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons seem to have made little progress towards the long-term contracts each of Dallas’ core players are eligible for.
It certainly seems as though head coach Mike McCarthy’s lame-duck season will begin with the Cowboys even further away from hoisting the franchise’s first Lombardi Trophy since 1996 than they began the 2023 campaign.
The Cowboys also seem to have made little progress on deals for Parsons or Prescott, with Lamb holding out as training camp gets underway with the two sides unable to strike an accord, as of yet.
Micah Parsons Opens Up on Dallas Cowboys Contract Situation
Parsons is a legitimate Defensive Player of The Year candidate, and one of the most disruptive edge rushers in the sport.
Yet, with Lamb and Prescott needing to be taken care of, the Cowboys and Parsons haven’t been able to reach a deal, either.
As training camp gets underway, Parsons opened up about where things stand in his negotiations, and his view of the Cowboys’ top priorities.
“If you kind of figure out how the money goes and how the contract goes,” Parsons said, via ESPN’s Todd Archer. “You kind of understand that business side. I think CeeDee takes up the value of two or three players. You’re talking about $30 million-plus per year. If you do that, how can you afford to pay CeeDee Lamb?” Parsons said. “That goes on for other guys potentially.
“The mindset I have is we have seven All-Pros or however the count may be. It might be more, it might be less, we got at least three guys I know can be All-Pro. I think a lot of guys are going to have breakout years. I think that plays into it too. When you talk about all these guys, it just leads to saying, ‘Hey, when are the other guys going to step up and be better for the team?'”
Parsons is coming off a career-year, at one of the most vital positions on an NFL roster, capping the 2023 campaign with a career-high 14 sacks, while adding 64 total tackles.
Dallas has some expensive and gifted mouths to feed, but if Jerry Jones and the Cowboys aren’t careful, Parsons, Lamb, and Prescott could drive up their value significantly if they have ascendent seasons and the franchise makes a deep postseason run.
