The San Francisco 49ers lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl for the second time in the past five seasons. Falling short of the ultimate goal is disappointing enough as it is, but now the team is facing big questions concerning the roster that got them to the Super Bowl. They are also looking for a new defensive coordinator after Steve Wilks are fired following the loss.
According to Spotrac, the 49ers only have a little over $570,000 in salary cap space for 2024. Even if they were not going to sign any free agents, they would need to make room to sign their 2024 NFL Draft class. Given the fact that they, along with every other team in the NFL, will also sign free agents, they will need to clear even more space.
This is going to lead to tough decisions, and on NFL analyst thinks that it may lead to the team cutting an eight-time Pro Bowl player.
NFL Analyst Names San Francisco 49ers Fullback Kyle Juszczyk as Possible Cap Casualty
There are not many pure fullbacks left in the NFL. Indeed, there are not many offense that utilize them anymore. Kyle Shanahan’s offense in San Francisco, however, does. As a result, Kyle Juszczyk has seen himself put together an impressive career in the Bay Area.
Juszczyk has made the Pro Bowl in each of the past eight seasons and was named First Team All Pro this past year. And while he has been a valuable member of the team, even if his contributions don’t always stuff the stat sheet, the 49ers are desperate to cut costs. Which may mean they cut him.
According to Dan Graziano of ESPN:
“Juszczyk has been in San Francisco for all seven of Kyle Shanahan’s years as coach. He is a vital part of the 49ers’ offense and surely would be missed. He also turns 33 in April and is scheduled to earn $6.25 million in salary and bonuses in each of the next two seasons. None of that money is guaranteed. Cutting him would save the team $4.911 million against its 2024 cap.
“If nothing else, it might need to go to Juszczyk and ask him to rework his deal. The relationship he has with Shanahan and the organization might make that easier to do than normal, but regardless, it’s difficult to imagine Juszczyk returning to the 49ers on his current contract.”
With rumors that disgruntled wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk could be traded, and with Juszczyk’s and others’ salary cap situations, the 49ers offense could have some new faces next year.
The good news is that, as Pro Bowl quarterback Brock Purdy as shown, it is possible for many different players to be successful in Shanahan’s system.
Hopefully that remains true in 2024.

He need to get Ezekiel and make him a fullback
Thats not going to happen as good as he was with Dallas and with New England he is up in age and with the salary cap that the 49ers are going to have its hard to sign anyone with less than a million in cap.
