San Francisco 49ers star quarterback Brock Purdy added another noteworthy performance to his stellar campaign on Sunday in a 45-29 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.
At this point, there’s no denying that the 23-year-old has a real case for this season’s MVP title. As improbable as this may have seemed before the year started, the fact of the matter is that the Niners QB has firmly established himself as one of the favorites to bag the coveted individual award.
San Francisco 49ers’ Brock Purdy Speaks Out on MVP Race
Purdy, who finished Sunday’s win with 16-of-25 completed passes for 242 yards, four touchdowns, and zero interceptions, is not one to toot his own horn, though. In fact, if you were to ask him, the young QB firmly believes that it’s his teammate Christian McCaffrey who deserves to be this season’s Most Valuable Player:
“I think Christian should be MVP,” Purdy said, via Nick Wagoner of ESPN. “I really do believe that. He does everything for us … and so in my eyes that’s an MVP.”
It’s hard to argue against Purdy’s statement here, especially considering what CMC has done in his first year in San Francisco. On Sunday against the Cardinals, it was McCaffrey who led the way for his team with 115 yards on 18 carries, with one touchdown.
Kyle Shanahan Chimes In
Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan has shared his thoughts on the MVP race between his two best players. At this point, the tenured shot-caller would rather stay out of the debate:
“I don’t have to differentiate, thank goodness,” Shanahan said. “But I’ve been around a couple MVPs probably in my career and … this is the most obvious thing to me. I might be biased being on their team but I don’t think so.”
At the end of the day, however, you have to say that it’s still Purdy who has the inside track on McCaffrey. While some might argue that CMC has played a more integral role behind the Niners’ success this season, the fact of the matter is that QBs always get first dibs.
Then again, you just never know.
