After losing this year’s Super Bowl to the Kansas City Chiefs with a score of 25-22, the San Francisco 49ers are looking to redeem their loss and make it back to the championship game once again. However, one star playmaker may not receive the contract he deserves ahead of next season.
NFL Insider Believes San Francisco 49ers Won’t Be Able to Extend Brandon Aiyuk’s Contract
According to Bleacher Report’s NFL insider Jordan Schultz, he believes that San Francisco does not have the funds to pay a “number one” receiver like Brandon Aiyuk. Who caught 75 balls for 1,342 yards and 7 touchdowns during the regular season.
“I think he really has emerged as a legit number one. I’m just not convinced. Considering how well he’s played and how much he’s emerged as a bonified number one wide receiver. I’m not convinced at this point that San Francisco is going to be able to pay Brandon Aiyuk the type of money he is going to command.”
While Aiyuk broke out this season achieving the 1,300-yard mark for the first time in his career, San Francisco still has Offensive Player of the Year Christian McCaffrey, All-Pro George Kittle and Deebo Samuel on roster. Which makes it difficult to pay Aiyuk the money he will most likely command.
Should San Francisco Trade Aiyuk or Extend His Contract?
Due to the hefty contract extension Aiyuk will likely ask for, trading him for assets would be the best situation for both parties. Multiple teams need a weapon on the outside with Aiyuk’s talent and Jordan Schultz believes he would be a top option if he landed on the market.
“If he hits the market, this is going to be one of the most coveted players in free agency period. Not just wide receivers. Because he’s that much of a difference maker… He’s that special of a player.”
Aiyuk is heading into the last year of his rookie deal and is expected to make just over 14 million dollars in 2024 assuming he isn’t traded or extended. If San Francisco does not extend his contract this season, it may cause issues in the long run considering the amount of money other weapons on offense are making. There is also a plethora of wide receivers to choose from in this year’s draft, which can serve as a replacement if they end up trading Aiyuk.
