New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones reportedly irritated his teammates before and during the controversial “woke” press conference announcing Jerod Mayo as their new head coach. Jones was benched several times during the regular season and played his final game against the New York Giants in November.
The New England Patriots are sick of their QB
According to a report by Greg A Bedard of Boston Sports Journal, teammates are fed up with the 2021 first-round pick. Jones made a couple of telling decisions at the end of the season and during Mayo’s introductory press conference that rubbed players the wrong way:
“Everyone’s watched [Jones] play, they’ve watched him act like a prima donna. The team is sick of it, everyone’s sick of it..He was in his workout gear which is ironic since he cleared his entire locker at the end of the season. Not a single hanger. Completely empty. … I mean, come on man,”
Mac Jones’ actions ticked off his teammates
Jones taking all of his items out of his locker at the end of the season hints the quarterback knows his time with the Patriots could be short. The Patriots could trade Jones to a team this offseason for a late-round draft pick like the San Francisco 49ers did when they traded Trey Lance to the Dallas Cowboys.
Jones’ appearance in workout clothes at the press conference was undoubtedly less than formal attire for the business-like event. But that’s a nitpicky gripe for a current player on the roster who is using the team’s facility this winter to keep in shape. (Which would help the Patriots get more trade value for Jones theoretically.)
Mayo hinted the Patriots were going to draft Jones‘ replacement in April during an interview with Steve Burton of WBZ-TV:
“What I will say is this: we’re gonna draft the best player for a position that is very important. You put the pieces together,” Mayo said.
The Patriots have given Jones the cold shoulder all season, and now in their offseason. Is there any reason Jones wouldn’t take his belongings and appear at a presser in workout gear?
