The Kansas City Chiefs, who won their second straight Super Bowl have expiring contracts to key players on both sides of the ball this off-season. One of those contracts is to superstar defensive lineman Chris Jones, who is the anchor of this Chiefs defense and is expected to receive a massive new deal.
Chris Jones Projected to Make $28.4 million per Season in Next Contract
According to Spotrac’s market value tool, Jones is projected to make $85 million dollars in a 3-year span. Which equals to $28.4 million on an average annual salary. Jones, who will turn 30 years old in July led the Chiefs in sacks with 10.5 to go with 29 quarterback hits and 13 tackles for loss.
According to The Athletic, there is “growing optimism” that both sides will agree to a deal which keeps Jones in Kansas City long term. General Manager Brett Veach acknowledged on Tuesday that re-signing Jones is the team’s top priority.
They have recently made moves to create cap space such as releasing Marques Valdez-Scantling, which free’s up $12 million in extra space. Kansas City is also expected to franchise tag L’Jarius Sneed and have not ruled out the option of a sign and trade.
Kansas City Chiefs Have Until March 11th to Sign Jones Before Other Teams Can Intervene
While the Chiefs still have time to negotiate with Jones and his management team about re-signing, they only have until March 11th before all other interested teams can enter contract talks with unrestricted free agents.
After screaming “We ain’t done yet” at this year’s Super Bowl parade, it seems the intention for Jones is to re-sign and go for a third straight championship ring. However, there is a world where both sides don’t get a deal done and he becomes a free agent. Multiple teams are hoping on that reality and will have an opportunity to pitch their offers if Kansas City fails to re-sign him before March 11th.
