Possible Scenarios for the Patriots After Losing Jakobi Meyers

Patriots Lose Jakobi Meyers To Vegas

As the New England Patriots had their top receivers pried away by the Las Vegas Raiders and former Offensive Coordinator Josh McDaniels, the Patriots should desperately need a wide receiver. After having a season with 19% (96/518) of the target being thrown Meyers’ way the Patriots now are in troubled waters ahead. With Mac Jones having a poor sophomore season and with Bill O’Brien coming in to try to help pick up the pieces the Patriots now take a big hit with the loss of Meyers.

Sources: The #Raiders are signing #Patriots FA WR Jakobi Meyers to a 3-year deal with $33M with $21M guaranteed. Another NE-Las Vegas tie-in, and a weapon for Jimmy Garoppolo. The deal was negotiated by Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey. pic.twitter.com/tOUDNVrDUF

Meyers signed a three-year deal with the Raiders which had a price tag of 21 million guaranteed. This price tag should have been easy enough for the Patriots to match with their 30 million dollars and change in open cap this off-season. The Patriots, after losing their top receiver, must move onto plan B; but what is plan B?

    Free Agency?

In free agency, there are a few names who could come in and not have the production of Jakobi Meyers but could be competent receivers. The Patriots truly do need a number one receiver which none of these players are but with only three receivers on the roster the Patriots sure do need a few players.

Adam Thielen was recently released by the Minnesota Vikings. As the Patriots are looking to help continue the development of their former first-round quarterback having a sure-handed veteran like Thielen could only help if he can remain healthy. As players get older, they do come with extra wear and tear but Thielen has been a model of consistency when it comes to being available. Thielen also is as sure-handed as they come catching over 72% of his targets over his career. Thielen would not be a number one but he would be a decent replacement for Meyers.

    Trade Market and Draft?

    Trade & Draft Scenario One

Now here is the more realistic thing to happen. With trade rumors circulating around DeAndre Hopkins, there is a bit of contention there, possibly. There was an alleged riff between Hopkins and the OC Bill O’Brien after rumors circulated O’Brien traded Hopkins from Houston to Arizona in 2020 because he did not like his “off the field” behavior. If the two could move past the alleged “dislike” for each other then this could be a great fit.

A draft pick that would fit perfectly with Hopkins with the number 14 pick would be Boston College’s, Zay Flowers. Flowers is a small and dynamic receiver who was one of the best players in the country the past two years and a severely underperforming BC Eagles team. Flowers was also coached by the Patriots staff at the Shrine Bowl in Las Vegas in early February. After spending the week with Shrine Bowl Head Coach Troy Brown, who is the Patriots’ Wide Receiver’s coach, reports were that the Patriots had nothing but high praise for the wideout.

This scenario gives you a true number-one receiver in Hopkins and a game-breaker in Flowers.

    Trade & Draft Scenario Two

With Jerry Jeudy being in limbo with the Broncos deciding between picking up Judey’s fifth-year option, he is a player who could be on the move as well. This would take some ironing out to do as Jeudy is heading into the fourth year so a trade with the Broncos would cost more than that of a more veteran receiver in Hopkins.

The #Patriots have spoken to the #Broncos in regards to both Jerry Jeudy & Courtland Sutton. Denver seems set on moving one of them

Jeudy in this scenario would be the more versatile receiver due to his multi-faceted ability as a player but he lacks a little bit of size. In this scenario, you would use your number 14 pick on TCU’s Quentin Johnston. Johnston dominated the Big 12 this year helping lead the Horned Frogs to a National Championship birth.

Johnston at 6’3” is a massive receiver and has elite breakaway speed. He clocked in at over 20 miles per hour on his way to a 76-yard touchdown. Johnston would have to slide down a bit to hopefully have a chance to end up in New England’s hands but it is for sure a possibility. Not many players have the measurables of this guy, so if you have a chance to draft him, you must.

Both trade scenarios are reasonable in theory to accomplish, but there is one thing for sure. The Patriots for sure are worse today than they were yesterday.
