The Philadelphia Eagles have been aggressive throughout the legal tampering free agency period as they have agreed to deals with a handful of quality players. However, one area of need was the secondary and the team turned to a familiar face as they have agreed to sign defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
He struggled to stay on the field last year, only appearing in three regular-season games and the opposition went 5-for-8 (62.5%) went targeting him. The deal with the Philadelphia Eagles is for three years and worth up to $33 million. This definitely helps solidify any issues that the team had in the secondary last season but do not be surprised if general manager Howie Roseman is not done making moves.
Gardner-Johnson laid for the Eagles in 2022 after being traded in the preseason from the New Orleans Saints. He had a monster season as in 23 games he had a league-leading six interceptions. He needs to improve when being targeted but has shown the ability to be a strong player for the defense.
Should the Philadelphia Eagles be considered a Super Bowl contender now?
The Philadelphia Eagles have been able to address areas of need throughout the beginning portion of free agency and make this team better. They have been able to add defensive end Bryce Huff and running back Saquon Barkley, among others. With the addition of defensive coordinator Vic Fangio this offseason as well, this team is beginning to make strides to look more like the team in the first half of the season compared to the second half.
The Eagles have definitely improved their roster for next year and beyond with the additions of a premier running back as well as adding C.J. Gardner-Johnson to the team to make sure the secondary is improved after struggling last season. However, they still have to have a solid remaining free agency (as they are reportedly still in the market for a linebacker) and 2024 NFL draft.
At this point, they have to be amongst the top contenders for the Super Bowl.
