The Philadelphia Eagles continue to bolster their roster in free agency and are adding on both sides of the ball. After losing running back D’Andre Swift, the team pivoted to get another running back and have agreed to terms with former New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley.
The deal is for three years, $37.75 million and could be worth up to $46.75 million. He also has a guaranteed $26 million in this deal. The maximum per-year salary he could receive would be $15.833 million and that would be the second-highest for a running back in NFL history.
The Philadelphia Eagles are pushing all their chips on the table and looking for a dynamic running back to bolster the offense. The team finished last season going eighth in rushing with 128.8 yards per game on the ground. Barkley finished the 2023 season with the Giants recording 247 carries for 962 yards (3.9 yards per attempt) with six rushing touchdowns as well as 41 receptions for 280 yards (6.8 yards per catch) with four receiving touchdowns.
The Philadelphia Eagles offense with quarterback Jalen Hurts and wide receivers AJ Brown and Devonta Smith is going to be scary. With the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants not doing much of note thus far, the Eagles are getting better and trying to get back to winning the NFC East and being a Super Bowl threat.
What should the Philadelphia Eagles do next?
After already signing defensive lineman Bryce Huff and now running back Saquon Barkley, people believed the Eagles to be finished. However, Diana Russini reported that the Eagles are not done and are still active in free agency. What the team needs to do next is focus on two specific aspects: the offensive line and secondary.
After Jason Kelce retiring, the Philadelphia Eagles need to find who will be the leader on the tush push and create that first bit of momentum. Obviously, the center position does more than that but that is a significant portion of how this offense roles. For the secondary, the defense continued to struggle against the pass and had a strong front seven.
Adding to those two parts of the team will be a great thing for the Eagles to try and be the number one seed in the NFC once again.
