The 2024 NFL free agency has officially been the craziest one yet. As many notable quarterbacks have already found their new destinations, most notably Russell Wilson and Kirk Cousins, the Chicago Bears‘ quarterback Justin Fields has yet to find a new suitor. Many of the teams that were rumored to have interest have already gone with different quarterbacks.
NFL Teams Do Not Think Justin Fields Is a Starter
NFL and ESPN insider Adam Schefter reported on Tuesday that teams around the league view Fields as a backup, and that is why we are seeing most of the teams go for other quarterbacks. While there have been many quarterbacks on the move, Fields will probably take more time before getting traded.
“He’s sitting there, and it doesn’t look like there’s a starting job out there at this particular moment, and so the teams that are looking at him would be looking at him as a backup,” Schefter said, via On3.
As we saw guys like Gardener Minshew and Sam Darnold get new deals, it is clear that Schefter’s report is correct. Most teams are looking for starters first and are not looking to trade second round picks for a guy they view as a backup.
Will Justin Fields Get Moved Before The Draft
While many had thought that the Chicago Bears quarterback would have gone to the Atlanta Falcons, it appeared that they did not even consider him in free agency as an option. It is likely that we do not see him get moved until after the draft when teams either get or don’t get their quarterback in the draft.
The Bears are obviously going to take Caleb Williams with their top pick, and they will have no need for Fields to be their backup. While it is unlikely that he moves before the draft there is always a chance that some team can jump the gun and trade for him. But whoever does trade for him will probably have him as a backup.
