The NFL has been going global for the last decade, playing numerous games around the world in England, Germany, and Mexico. While there have even been talks about creating a team in London, that will not happen any time soon.
However, the Super Bowl could definitely go overseas before a team does. The Mayor Of London Sadiq Khan is pushing for the the legendary game to be held in London in the near future.
NFL Super Bowl Could Head Across The Atlantic Ocean
Sadiq Khan has served as the Mayor of London since 2016, and he was recently very vocal about bringing some of the biggest sporting events to the city. He was quoted saying that his goal is to,
“fully cement London’s reputation as the undisputed sports capital of the world” and potentially host a Super Bowl in the city.
“London is already the sporting capital of the world. If I’m re-elected next Thursday – we’ll go even further. We’ll look to bring WrestleMania, Superbowl and the NBA to London, and put together another bid for the 2040 Olympics,” Khan tweeted Thursday.
The league has built a great working relationship with London over the last decade plus. Games have been played in London since way back in 2007. It started with just one game a year but after 2012 there have been multiple games held in the city. Now games are played all over the city in venues such as Wembley Stadium, Twickenham Stadium and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Roger Goodell Says Super Bowl Overseas Is Possible
While Kahn is pushing for this dream of bringing the Super Bowl to the city, it means nothing unless the league is interested in such a move. Now commissioner Roger Goodell has told the media that this is something the league is seriously considering the colossal idea.
“It is not impossible, and it is something that has been discussed before,” Goodell said at a fan forum, via ESPN.
Just the fact that the league is considering this move must make football fans in England very happy. The league will continue to play multiple games in the city. This year the Jacksonville Jaguars, Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears will all be playing games in the 2024 season and their opponents have yet to be named.
It would be a monumental moment if the league ever decides to take their biggest game overseas. As fans, how would you feel if the Super Bowl was not in America?
