For the first time in over two decades, Bill Belichick isn’t going to be on an NFL team in the 2024 season. Belichick failed to find a head coaching job after leaving the New England Patriots, leading many to ask about his future in the league.
While Belichick found himself jobless after missing out on the Atlanta Falcons coaching gig, that doesn’t mean he’s calling it a career in the NFL. If anything, it could only motivate the legendary tactician to make a return in the future.
Bill Belichick Eyeing 2025 NFL Return

According to the latest intel from Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, Belichick is expected to take a year off and then come back and try again in 2025 when more head coaching jobs potentially open up in the NFL.
“The fact that Bill Belichick just sort of hangs out as a coaching free agent after the greatest run of all time over two decades in New England is still tough to fathom, and it remains a talking point leaguewide,” Fowler wrote.
“After speaking to a few people close to Belichick, here’s the sense I get: He’s prepared to take a year off and will gear up for the 2025 cycle, with several big jobs potentially opening.”
It’s definitely not a surprising move considering that Belichick still has every desire to become a head coach. It remains possible that Belichick could coach in 2024 if a team struggles and opts to fire their current head coach.
For now, though, it’s best to expect Belichick to be off the NFL for all of 2024.
Bill Belichick Not Disappointed With Missing Out on Atlanta Falcons’ Head Coaching Job

As for Bill Belichick’s failure to land the Atlanta Falcons’ coaching gig despite the massive interest between the two sides, the former New England Patriots boss is reported not that disappointed over it.
While there have been reports that he was pissed, that’s not really the case, according to Fowler, Contrary to reports that Belichick wanted total control on the team that he would take over (per FOX Sports), the ESPN report also refuted those claims.
Here’s what Fowler further said on the matter:
“Belichick was interested in the Atlanta Falcons job but wasn’t necessarily crestfallen that it didn’t happen. The Falcons had several variables to work through, including the dynamic of retaining general manager Terry Fontenot and the level of involvement from chief executive officer Rich McKay,” Fowler said.
“As the Falcons did their first wave of interviews and reset their coaching search, they decided Raheem Morris was the best fit. Belichick was searching for a job for the first time in two-plus decades and was doing his own fact-finding, which was new and required patience, and I don’t get the sense that he was trying to bulldoze a front office. But does he need a structure that gives him some level of power? Sure.”
There have been rumors that the Falcons also did not proceed on hiring Belichick because they didn’t want him to fully restructure the team and end up leaving just after a couple of seasons. There were also reported fears from the front office that they would lose their jobs in Belichick’s arrival.
Regardless of what has been said, it looks like Belichick–who owns a 302-165 win-loss coaching record–is being patient when it comes to waiting for the right opportunity for him.
