NFL Performance of The Week
My NFL Performance of The Week for Week 6 goes to one of the greatest to ever do it in Buffalo Bills‘ DE Von Miller. Miller, fresh off a Super Bowl victory where he got two sacks (that brought him to a tie for the most all time in SB history) was figured to return to the fold as a mainstay with the Rams. His natural pass rushing ability & arsenal of tools already made for an extremely formidable addition. You pair that with the freedom it gave not only future hall of famer Aaron Donald, but the rest of the Rams front seven, & you’d assume everyone involved would return for the 2022 season. Or, as we say, run that back.
The Buffalo Bills & Brandon Beane had other plans, though. The Bills already had one of, if not THE most complete roster in football. However, they left no stone unturned this off-season and that included signing Von Miller to a gaudy six year, 120 million dollar deal. Buffalo already had the number one ranked defense in the NFL, but hey, when you can add a guy that has 115.5 career sacks, you do it. Miller’s addition turned heads not only because of the tremendous talent he is, but also due to his contract. Concerns over Miller’s age and ability to stay on the field began to rise. He’s 33 years old, joining his 3 team in less than a year, & had injury problems recently. I was never one of those people. I truly believed that much in him. Regardless, I understand the pause some may have had.
GAMEPLAY
Now, let’s get into some game play. Coming into Sunday, the Bills were 4-1 and absolutely rocking. Miller specifically was already on a great sack pace. He’s played extremely well considering the tough teams such as the Dolphins & Ravens they’ve had to play. Also, he’s done well considering the relatively low snap count due to the Rams & Steelers blowouts. Going into the Chiefs game he had four sacks, three TFL’s, two pass breakups, and a fair amount of pressure. Again, right on pace for what you would expect from a guy of his caliber– especially on such low play count.
Albeit not surprising, it’s still utterly amazing just how much Von Miller can take over a game when he wants to. The Kansas City Chiefs not only have one of the consensus five best offensive lines in football, they also have arguably the best quarterback & play callers as well. Not to mention Mahomes’s ability to extend plays with his legs. That combination can cause a very long day at the office for an edge defender. Miller once again defied the odds and completely took over the game. Miller started off hot with a first half sack and 4 pressures that resulted in a couple holding calls.
However, it was how Miller finished the game that truly earned him performance of the week. On the last three Chiefs offensive possessions he shined. Miller had a hurry on 3rd down to completely blow up the play and ended up getting the tackle of Mahomes to force a field goal. On the next drive, Miller had a huge third down sack to force a punt. That extra possession allowed the Bills offense to take the lead. Finally, he got the game winning pressure that blew up the play and forced a bad Mahomes throw that resulted in an interception and Bills win. Completely dominant. The NFL is on notice.
On the season, Miller is now up to six sacks (2nd in the NFL), eight tackles for loss (3rd in the NFL), & 26 pressures (5th in the NFL). Ridiculous numbers for anyone, but especially a guy at 33 years old playing on a reduced snap count. Miller never ceases to amaze me. NFL Performance of The Week and more await Miller. Von Miller, take a bow!
