The New England Patriots are grabbing every headline today. In a press conference earlier today, owner Robert Kraft and head coach Bill Belichick confirmed that they are parting ways “mutually and amicably.” Shortly after this press conference, Kraft took questions from the media and addressed the state of the Patriots.
Robert Kraft Not Happy With State of New England Patriots
Robert Kraft essentially stated that he was not happy with where the Patriots were going when he answered questions from the media. His exact quote was:
“What’s gone on here the last 3-4 years isn’t what we want. We have a responsibility to do what we can to fix it to the best our ability.” -Robert Kraft
Bill Belichick was the head coach of the New England Patriots for 24 seasons. Throughout most of his tenure, the Patriots had all kinds of success. New England won six Super Bowls and appeared in three others during those first 20 years. However, one key event happened before the last four years.
Tom Brady Leaving
After the 2019-20 season, QB Tom Brady chose to move on from the New England Patriots. This was after he was on the team for 20 years. It was clear that the Patriots could not maintain the same level of success without him.
Veteran QB Cam Newton took over the next season. Then, the Patriots tried to start a new era with QB Mac Jones. However, he has been benched for QB Bailey Zappe on multiple occasions. Now, the Patriots are expected to move on from both of these quarterbacks in the offseason.
New England has had just one winning season and one playoff game in the past four seasons. The Patriots finished the 2023-24 NFL season with a 4-13 record. It was one of the four worst records in the NFL this season. Now, New England looks to start fresh with a new head coach after 24 seasons and Kraft tries to get back to winning ways that are very difficult for anybody to replicate.
