There was a time when former San Francisco 49ers safety Greg Cox was one of the best feel-good stories in the NFL. After his high school grades in Columbus, Ohio were too low for him to get into a four-year college, he hopped on a bus to Salinas, California and enrolled in at Hartnell Junior College. After two years of hard work, he was playing football for San Jose State University.
After going undrafted in the 1988 NFL Draft, Cox was signed by the 49ers and made the roster as a safety. In his rookie season, the 49ers won Super Bowl XXIII.
The following season, Cox played for the New York Giants, but played for the 49ers again in 1990 and 1991. Unfortunately, his NFL career came to a screeching halt after just four seasons.

The 49ers waived Cox in November of 1991, just hours before he was indicted for rape and false imprisonment. At the time, the team stated his release was a football decision.
Cox went to trial, but was acquitted of all charges after inconsistencies in the alleged victim’s stories. However, this was just the beginning of his troubling legal history.
In 2008, Cox was arrested for an attempted robbery in Vallejo, California. In 2016, he was arrested for multiple gun charges, including being a felon in possession of a firearm.

According to recent reports. Cox was with a woman named Amanda Champman, his apparent girl friend, when the two broke into a house in Leggett, California. When the owner of the residence returned home, an argument ensued between the couple and the homeowner.
Chapman pulled out a gun and pointed it at resident. When the resident tried to grab the gun out of her hand, it went off. Cox and Champman fled the scene while the homeowner was left with a wound in his hand.
Both Cox and Champman were tracked down and arrested.
On Thursday, it was reported that Cox had been released and that prosecutors were declining to press charges against the former NFL player.
Chapman, however, remains in custody.
