Trades between division rivals are uncommon in the NFL, but given how things have unfolded lately, we might see one soon between the Minnesota Vikings and the Chicago Bears.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Minnesota Vikings are one of the teams interested in potentially acquiring Justin Fields since they have yet to sort out their quarterback situation.
It is widely believed that the Minnesota Vikings are keen to bring Kirk Cousins back in 2024. However, neither side has yet to reach a new agreement.
Retaining Kirk Cousins is a challenge for the Minnesota Vikings
Kirk Cousins is set to test out the free agency market this month. Despite coming off an Achilles injury, the 35-year-old can still command a high annual salary, and he can get that with several teams like the Atlanta Falcons.
“I expect the Falcons to make a strong pursuit. I have been told by multiple sources this week that signing Cousins—not trading for Justin Fields—is the Falcons’ top QB solution, assuming Cousins makes it to free agency,” wrote Dan Graziano of ESPN.
Minnesota is under pressure to lock down Cousins soon, because if they fail to do so before March 12, they will carry a $28.5 million dead money charge on their salary cap, and Cousins is set to hit free agency for the second time in his NFL career.
Minnesota doesn’t want to lose Cousins for essentially nothing. However, they aren’t giving him a blank check because of their limited cap space.
Is trading for Justin Fields possible for the Minnesota Vikings?
Trading for Justin Fields could be in play for the Minnesota Vikings, but the Chicago Bears have yet to play their hand, and the 25-year-old quarterback hasn’t officially asked for a trade.
According to league sources, if the Chicago Bears decide to trade Fields, they would like a Day 2 pick in a potential deal. Besides Minnesota, Pittsburgh and Las Vegas are reportedly on Fields’ radar.
