LSU fans receives shocking news on Wednesday afternoon that Walker Howard has decided to enter his name into the transfer portal after one season with the Tigers. Howard had limited appearances during the 2022 season as Jayden Daniels led the way for the quarterback room. The freshman appeared in the 65-17 win against Southern and the 63-7 win against Purdue in the bowl game. The decision by Howard leaves the quarterback room to three heading into next season and leaves question marks on what could have went into his decision to transfer out of the program.
What Walker Howard’s Decision Leaves the Quarterback Room At:
Howard’s decision shifts the quarterback room to three with Daniels and Garrett Nussmeier as the frontrunners heading into the 2023 season. LSU will be adding Rickie Collins into the mix for the quarterback class, but that won’t be until next season gets closer. Collins will now serve as QB3 for the Tigers and he has been able to show his his versatility during his career at Woodlawn.
The decision makes for no wiggle room in the quarterback room as the only experienced quarterbacks are now Daniels and Nussmeier. The Tigers can’t afford to let Nussmeier walk away in case that Daniels suffers an injury during that season that could test the depth of the position. If Nussmeier were to leave, LSU would have to tap into the transfer portal themselves to build more depth in the quarterback room.
With Daniels coming back for his senior season at LSU, this left concern that Howard could be hitting the transfer portal and that was brought to fruition.
The Factors That Led Walker Howard Entering the Transfer Portal:
The actual reason of Howard leaving the program hasn’t been released, but Nussmeier could very well have a big part in the former four-star quarterback entering the transfer portal. Howard would have to wait until the 2024 season to start competing for the starting quarterback job for the Tigers. Daniels coming back makes the window for Howard to compete for the job to extend to the next season.
Daniels will undoubtedly be the starting quarterback for LSU as we head into the 2023 season. After Daniels collegiate career is over, that would have left the door open for Nussmeier and Howard to compete for the job into the 2024 season. We have seen what Nussmeier is capable of with his gunslinger ability, but he has also been prone to turning the ball over several times. With Howard entering the transfer portal, that leaves the starting quarterback job in 2024 for Nussmeier to take it with ease.
We will have to wait and see where Howard ends up going, but the future for the quarterback position looks clear with Daniels being the guy in 2023 and Nussmeier taking over the reigns in 2024.
