The Los Angeles Chargers have a defensive coordinator
The Los Angeles Chargers announced a few news coaching hires and elevations for the 2023 season. The Chargers made a few assistant coaching changes following their heartbreaking loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Wild Card round.
The team will have a new defensive and offensive coordinator. The Chargers announced earlier in the offseason that Kellen Moore would be the new offensive coordinator. They named their defensive Coordinator Monday morning. (Their former defensive coordinator Renaldo Hill left for a job demotion with the Miami Dolphins.)
According to a statement by the Chargers, Derrick Ansley will be promoted to the defensive coordinator position. Jeff Howard will be the linebacker’s coach. Robert Muschamp will be the defensive quality control coach. Doug Nussmeier will be the quarterback’s coach. Tom Donatell was promoted to passing game coordinator/ secondary coach.
Per the statement, the Los Angeles Chargers promoted Ansley to the coordinator position after his success coaching the secondary:
“Ansley enters his third season with the Chargers in 2023, his first in the role of Defensive Coordinator. Over the last two seasons directing the secondary, Ansley’s group has been prominent in the defense’s ability to limit the passing attack of opposing offenses, ranking fourth in the AFC in passing defense since the start of the 2021 season.”
We’ll see if he can elevate the Chargers’ whole defense in 2023.
