Report: Los Angeles Chargers DC Takes Job Title Demotion To Leave For AFC Contender

The Los Angeles Chargers lose their defensive coordinator

The Los Angeles Chargers had another wrinkle in their coaching staff this week. According to multiple reports, Renaldo Hill, their defensive coordinator since 2021, has left for a job title demotion. The Chargers lost their offensive coordinator after the postseason.

Many Chargers fans thought head coach Brandon Staley should have been fired after his team’s early playoff exit to the Jacksonville Jaguars when they blew a huge first-half lead. In typical NFL carousel fashion, the Los Angeles Chargers made offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi the fall guy. They hired Dallas Cowboys scapegoat Kellen Moore as their next offensive coordinator.

Now it appears Hill wants to leave a sinking ship in  Los Angeles.

    Miami’s new pass-game coordinator

According to a report by Adam Schefter with ESPN, Hill has joined the Miami Dolphins staff as their defensive pass-game coordinator:

“Hill was Fangio’s top target and, out of respect for his former boss, Chargers head coach Brandon Staley allowed his defensive coordinator to leave for Miami.

Hill has been the Chargers’ defensive coordinator for the past two seasons. He was the defensive backs coach on Fangio’s staff with the Denver Broncos in 2019 and ’20. Staley also worked on Fangio’s Broncos staff in 2019 as the outside linebackers coach.”

Fangio is well respected defensive coordinator. The Dolphins are expected to be an AFC Championship contender if Tua Tagovailoa stays healthy. But Hill’s backward lateral move appears to show he doesn’t have confidence in the Chargers moving forward.

    The Chargers hire Hill’s replacement

The Los Angeles Chargers have their next defensive coordinator as of Monday morning. According to Tom Pelissero with the NFL Network, the Chargers will promote Derrick Ansley to the defensive coordinator title. Tommy Donatell will become the next secondary coach/pass-game coordinator.

The #Chargers plan to promote Derrick Ansley to defensive coordinator and Tommy Donatell to secondary coach/pass game coordinator, per sources.

Renaldo Hill, who had been L.A.’s DC the past two years, is joining the #Dolphins staff on a multi-year deal.
