The Kansas City Chiefs know all about bad breakups. Just a few years ago, they traded All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins in what was a controversial decision. While Hill has seen personal success with the Dolphins, it is the Chiefs who have won two Super Bowl championships since the trade went down. The initial deal and the team’s success without him has led to some perceived bad blood between the two parties.
Nine-time Pro Bowl tight end Travis Kelce, who of course witnessed the divorce between Kansas City and Hill first-hand, also has a incredibly popular podcast, New Heights, which he hosts with his brother Jason Kelce, formerly of the Philadelphia Eagles. In their most recent episode which aired today (Wednesday), the two discussed Jason’s former team acquiring Kenny Pickett in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Kenny Pickett Requested a Trade after the Pittsburgh Steelers Acquired Russell Wilson
Last season, Pickett (the 20th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft) had a 62.0% completion percentage, 2,070 passing yards, six touchdowns, and four interceptions in 12 games played. This performance showed no improvement from his 2022 rookie campaign when he had a 63% completion percentage, 2,404 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and nine interceptions.
Despite Pickett’s poor play, the Steelers still managed to finish 10-7 and clinched the final spot in the AFC Playoffs. As they go forward as an organization, it is clear that one of the biggest reasons why they could not advance in the postseason was because of poor quarterback play. For this reason, Pittsburgh signed former Super Bowl champion quarterback Russell Wilson, who had been released by the Denver Broncos.
Not only did Pittsburgh acquire Wilson, they also declared that he would be their starting quarterback in 2024. Pickett did not take kindly to this and requested a trade. As a result, Pickett was sent to Philadelphia and the Steelers acquired former Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields to backup Wilson next season.
Kansas City Chiefs Star Travis Kelce Sings Taylor Swift Song “Bad Blood” to Describe Kenny Pickett Trade
“Kenny and the Steelers — their relationship ended in a little bad blood,” Kelce sang on the New Heights podcast that aired today (linked above). “Bad Blood,” of course, is one of Taylor Swift’s best-known songs from her 1989 album.
Both Kelce brothers talked about how playing for the Eagles is a return home for Pickett and a chance to have a fresh start. Jason, of course, is looking forward to Pickett being added to his former team’s quarterback room and thinks that the high-quality players on their roster will help him grow.
