It was inevitable that the Chicago Bears would eventually let go of Justin Fields after their third season with him left the team in limbo. However, that doesn’t make the separation any less painful.
While the Bears did everything they could to make sure Fields landed with the right team, it was understandable that some of their players who liked playing with the Ohio State product would be frustrated with the way the entire thing was handled.
One of the players who were disgruntled with the Justin Fields trade was tight end Cole Kmet. However, he clarified that he somewhat appreciated how the Bears approached the entire thing.
Cole Kmet expressed disappointment over Justin Fields’ trade to the Pittsburgh Steelers
The Spun’s Matt Hladik covered Kmet’s appearance at the CHGO Bears Podcast to talk about the recent events surrounding the Bears, particularly Fields’ departure from the team.
He was straightforward with his thoughts on the event and how the team handled the delicate situation:
“I was planning to hit the city and go out, but then I got a call from Flus and the people with the Bears, and decided to stay in after the news with Justin,” Kmet said. “Obviously, really upsetting that it came to that, and where it was at that moment, but you kind of felt like the writing was on the wall with that.”
Despite his disappointment in losing Fields, Kmet said he was “grateful” Eberflus gave him a heads up on the matter, calling it a “classy move” on his part.
Kmet had a productive 2023 with Fields as his QB. Through 17 games, he caught 73 passes for 719 yards and six touchdowns on 9.8 yards per reception.
Kmet expressed excitement over possible Caleb Williams success for the Chicago Bears
While he’s affected by how FIelds left the team, he’s also eager to start 2024 with a new QB, which is widely believed to be USC’s Caleb Williams:
“I still think, really exciting times for the Bears here,” Kmet said. “This is really exciting times and with whatever rookie they decide to go with, looks like that’s the direction that it’s going, what a great opportunity. What a great opportunity for a young kid to come in here with an infrastructure in place and be ready to go win football games from the get-go.”
While Williams has glaring issues that need to be addressed, he’s proven himself to be a winner who has a rocket of an arm. Both Kmet and the rest of the Chicago Bears fanbase will be in for an exciting 2024 once they finally have their QB1.
