The Kansas City Chiefs are the first back-to-back Super Bowl Champions since Tom Brady and the New England Patriots won consecutive titles in 2003 and 2004. For much of the past two seasons, the Chiefs and their fans have had to put up with other fanbases and even members of the media claiming that the NFL was rigged for them to win. This became even more true when tight end Travis Kelce and popstar Taylor Swift publicly acknowledged that they are dating back in September.
While the NFL being rigged or scripted is complete and utter nonsense (reference my podcast interview with former Green Bay Packers Super Bowl Champion Gilbert Brown), it does not help that Kansas City’s rivals buy into the narrative that the Chiefs are “too” successful or “get away” with too much. One coach’s recent comments promised his own fans that things will be different the next time his team faces Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs.
Las Vegas Raiders Head Coach Antonio Pierce Put Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs on Notice
New Las Vegas Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce recently went on Maxx Crosby’s podcast, and told his defensive lineman that he wants their team to be extra physical when attacking Mahomes going forward:
“We’ve got the Jordan rules and what I’m calling, from now on as long as I’m here, the Patrick Mahomes rules. So, you remember when Jordan was going through it with the Pistons, all those guys in the ’80s; before he became Michael Jordan, Air Jordan, the Pistons used to whup his ass. Any time he came to the hole? Elbows, feeling him, love taps. We touched him. We’re in the head, mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually; I’m touching you. So, I showed those guys Jordan getting his ass whupped.”
In other words, Pierce wants the Raiders defense to make life even more miserable than usual on Mahomes when they are able to get to him.
ESPN Analyst Worries Pierce’s Comments Will Lead to Patrick Mahomes Getting Special Treatment from Referees
The quarterback, no matter what team he plays for, is one of the most protected players in the NFL due to certain rules that have been put in place. Given the league’s tendency to be overprotective (at times) of star quarterbacks, ESPN’s Mike Greenberg worries that referees will now be more prone to throw flags in the Chiefs’ favor when they play the Raiders:
“The league maybe can’t do anything about these comments, but it can certainly tell the officials when they have the Raiders vs. the Chiefs to keep a close eye on that. You could see a festival of flags.”
Pierce’s comments certainly put the Raiders’ defense on the NFL’s radar when it comes to Chiefs’ matchups, but they also provided bulletin board material to a small-market team that has thrived on proving everyone wrong three times in the last five years.
Hope it was worth it.
