The Kansas City Chiefs are the back-to-back Super Bowl Champions. By all accounts, they are among the favorites to win the Super Bowl again this year. Doing so would make them the first NFL team to win three straight Super Bowls, and the first team in the league to win three consecutive championships (the Green Bay Packers have done so twice).
Their tight end, Travis Kelce, is dating 14-time Grammy Award winner Taylor Swift. Patrick Mahomes, the winner of three Super Bowl MVP Awards, is quietly going about his offseason.
By all accounts, with their two biggest stars not creating any controversy, the team should have a great deal of positive press. Unfortunately, that is not the case, especially after kicker Harrison Butker’s controversial speech at Benedictine College’s graduation.
Kansas City Chiefs Kick Harrison Butker Has Come Under Fire for Ultra-Conservative Comments
Butker’s speech has been criticized for a great many things, from his attack on the LGBTQ+ population to his assertion that Catholicism is the only true religion. However, perhaps his most unpopular remarks were the ones he made about women and their role in society.
“For the ladies present today, congratulations on an amazing accomplishment. You should be proud of all that you have achieved to this point in your young lives. I want to speak directly to you briefly because I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you. How many of you are sitting here now about to cross this stage and are thinking about all the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career?
“Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.”
Butker’s comments have created a stir both online and in other media. Today Show hosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager both took serious offense to his comments. Even hip-hop artist Flavor Flav took to social media to express his disdain for the words spoken about women.
As a shot to Butker’s comments, the Los Angeles Chargers depicted him making a meal in a kitchen in their Sims-inspired NFL schedule release video.
The City of Kansas City’s Social Media Account Semi-Doxed Harrison Butker in a Deleted Tweet
As mentioned, the backlash for Butker’s comments has been intense with people from all over the country sharing their opinions on the matter. However, one former Kansas City official took to social media to ensure the people of the city that Butker’s comments do not reflect the attitudes of the entire population:
“Harrison Butker doesn’t represent Kansas City nor has he ever. Kansas City has always been a place that welcomes, affirms, and embraces our LGBTQ+ community members.”
Apparently, someone who has access to the city of Kansas City’s official X (formerly Twitter) account felt that a little more needed to be said. In a since deleted post, the account stated: “Just a reminder that Harrison Butker lives in Lee’s Summit.”
Later, after the post was deleted, the city account posted an apology stating that the previous tweet had been shared “in error.”
Many comments on the post, though, criticized the account for doxing, or revealing where someone lives, Butker. Typically, doxing includes providing exact addresses and other information, but many feel like the post went too far, including Missouri’s attorney general.
Missouri’s Attorney General Wants to Take Action for Tweet About Kansas City Chiefs Kicker Harrison Butker
In a statement reported by Fox 4 in Kansas City, Missouri attorney general Andrew Bailey stated:
“I will enforce the Missouri Human Rights Act to ensure Missourians are not targeted for their free exercise of religion.”
He also said he wanted whoever was responsible for the city’s post to be held accountable.
Whether or not any legal action will be taken remains to be seen.
