The Kansas City Chiefs have seen their team name in the headlines for unfortunate reasons as of late. Wide receiver Rashee Rice is facing a slew of legal issues stemming from a high-speed car accident in which he was reportedly driving 119 miles per hour. He left the scene of the accident before authorities arrived. His involvement in a shooting while attending Southern Methodist University has also come to light and is dominating headlines.
In other unfortunate news, kicker Harrison Butker is being widely criticized for a commencement speech he gave at Benedictine College in Kansas. As it is a Catholic establishment, Butker used the opportunity to share his far right religious and social views. His comments, which were offensive to women and the LGBTQ+ community, have drawn criticism from fans and celebrities alike.
Kansas City Chiefs Kick Harrison Butker Believes Women Are More Fulfilled at Home and LGBTQ+ People Are a Problem
In his speech Butker says, in part:
“Tragically, so many priests revolve much of their happiness from the adulation they receive from their parishioners. And in searching for this, they let their guard down and become overly familiar. This undue familiarity will prove to be problematic every time. Because as my teammate’s girlfriend says, ‘familiarity breeds contempt.'”
His teammate is tight end Travis Kelce, and his girlfriend, of course, is 14-time Grammy winner Taylor Swift. “Familiarity breeds contempt” is line from her song “Bejeweled.”
Butker later said:
“Things like abortion, IVF, surrogacy, euthanasia, as well as a growing support for degenerative cultural values in media all stem from the pervasiveness of disorder.
“For the ladies present today, congratulations on an amazing accomplishment. I want to speak directly to you briefly because I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you.
“Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.”
Interestingly, Butker’s own mother is a respected physicist.
Of the LGBTQ+ community, Butker said that Pride Month is “the deadly sin sort of pride.” He also stated that the community promotes “dangerous” gender ideologies.
The NFL Releases a Firm Statement Regarding Kansas City Chiefs Kicker Harrison Butker’s Speech
In a written statement to People, NFL Senior Vice President Jonathan Breane said:
“Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity. His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger.”
Breane is also the NFL’s Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer.
Obviously, the league is distancing itself far away from anything and everything that Butker said.
