The Kansas City Chiefs continue to face the reality of playing next season, and potentially longer, without top returning wide receiver Rashee Rice. The rookie standout faces eight felony charges after causing a multi-car crash two weeks ago in which Rice fled the scene. Updates continue to make things worse for Rice, with reports surfacing on Friday that the SMU product was driving 119 miles per hour before the accident took place.
Rice turned himself into authorities on Thursday, and they took him to DeSoto jail. He posted bail, where he will now await the remainder of his legal process and potential discipline from the league office and his employer, the Kansas City Chiefs, per Josina Anderson.
Kansas City Chiefs WR Rashee Rice: Causes Multi-Car Accident
Rashee Rice made headlines on Easter weekend after a car registered under his name was involved in a crash on the North Central Expressway in Texas. Video surfaced of Rice fleeing the scene and leaving his vehicle behind. Reports later surfaced that marijuana was found in his car after the incident.
Rice now faces eight federal charges in connection to speeding and causing an accident. Rice’s lawyer, Royce West, said, “Mr. Rice acknowledges his actions and feels deeply for those injured due to this accident. Our legal team is now tasked with reviewing all legal documents.”
Rice could face jail time, but even if he sidesteps time behind bars, he will likely face a penalty from the NFL. Monetary fines, suspension, or a ban remain on the table for the Super Bowl-winning pass-catcher.
Rashee Rice: Stellar Rookie Season
Off the field, Rice may have put himself in a situation that will keep him sidelined from the NFL permanently. On the field, he flashed as one of the best rookie wideouts in the league. Rice played a reserve role to begin the year before exploding for 107 yards and a touchdown on eight catches during a Week 11 win against the Las Vegas Raiders. The 23-year-old followed up the career performance with eight catches for 64 yards in a loss to the Green Bay Packers. From Week 11 to Week 16, Rice becomes Patrick Mahomes’ favorite target, registering 43 receptions for 518 yards and three scores.
The Philadelphia native finished his rookie campaign with 79 receptions for 938 yards and seven scores. Rice continued his dominance come the postseason, catching 26 passes for 262 yards and a score. He received eight targets in the Super Bowl, catching six for 39 yards. The Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in overtime.
