Although they were defeated by Patrick Mahomes’ Kansas City Chiefs in the Conference Finals earlier this year, the Baltimore Ravens still proved they were one of the top teams in the NFL. Proof of that is how their running back unit was included in PFF’s top five ahead of the 2024 campaign.
The 2023 season was a banner year for the Ravens, who built on their previous playoff berth to capture their second AFC North division title in as many years. Despite being ravaged by injuries, including season-ending blows to key players like J.K. Dobbins and Marlon Humphrey, the Ravens managed to post their best record since 2019, finishing 13-4 and securing the AFC’s top playoff seed.
Quarterback Lamar Jackson was once again magnificent, earning his second NFL MVP award, as Baltimore’s stifling defense led the league in sacks, points allowed and takeaways – a historic trifecta. The Ravens’ 10 wins over teams with winning records set a new league standard, underscoring their dominance.
Baltimore’s postseason run came to an end in the AFC Championship game, where they fell to the eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. However, the Ravens’ ability to overcome adversity and remain an elite contender has them poised for another deep playoff push in 2024. With their sights set on ending their lengthy Super Bowl drought, the future remains bright in Charm City.
Baltimore Ravens’ Running Back Group Ranked Among Top 5 Ahead of NFL 2024 Season
Part of the Ravens’ success last season was how their running back group performed. Now, they have been included in the top five, as seen in an article written by Trevor Sikkema for PFF.
“Even without including dual-threat quarterback Lamar Jackson, the Ravens ranked seventh in the NFL in PFF rushing grade last year. Now they throw All-Pro back Derrick Henry into the mix.
Henry trailed only Christian McCaffrey in PFF wins above average last season — 0.25 to 0.20. Keaton Mitchell is coming off a torn ACL but looked like a great RB2 before going down last year,” Sikkema wrote.
Last season, Baltimore boasted an offense which placed fourth out of 32 teams in the NFL. Meanwhile, their defense was ranked best, leading to their dominance during the previous campaign.
It remains to be seen whether Baltimore’s RB unit can perform well again this season or not. In any case, Jackson and the Ravens will enter the upcoming campaign as contenders for the Chiefs’ title.
