The Kansas City Chiefs are one of the most talked about teams in the NFL. Of course, a great deal of this has to do with the fact they have won the Super Bowl in each of the previous two seasons. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is one of the highest paid and best players in the game; Andy Reid is entering the discussion of being one of the greatest head coaches of all time; and Travis Kelce continues to set the standard for the tight end position.
That being said, everyone would be lying if they said that Kelce’s relationship with 14-time Grammy Award winner Taylor Swift wasn’t also a huge reason for the team’s popularity. After they made their relationship public in September of last year, a whole new demographic of fans (Swifties) started following the NFL.
Travis Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs’ Teammates Embraced Having Taylor Swift Around
After his game-winning catch in Super Bowl LVIII, wide receiver Mecole Hardman went on a podcast and talked about what it is like having Swift around the team. He said that when Kelce first introduced Swift to him, the wide receiver was doing card tricks in the locker room.
When the Super Bowl was over, he stated that Swift told him he really does have “magic hands.” Hardman went on to explain how down-to-earth she is and how much fun it is be around her.
Head coach Andy Reid has said on multiple occasions that a lot of the Chiefs players view Swift as a kind of little sister, that they are actually rather protective of her due to the criticism she and Kelce get in the media.
Reid also said that Swift made baked goods for the offensive line during the season.
By all accounts, all of Kelce’s Chiefs teammates love Taylor Swift. Except for one, it appears.
Kansas City Chiefs Kicker Harrison Butker Disrespects Taylor Swift in Graduation Speech
Speaking at Benedictine College in Kansas, Butker went on a tirade against a variety of current socio-economic norms, including women being able to pursue fulfilling and worthwhile careers outside of the home. He quoted Swift saying, “As my teammate’s girlfriend says, ‘Familiarity breeds contempt’,” refusing to mention either Kelce or Swift by name.
He then went on the following rant:
“How many of you [women] are sitting here now, about to cross this stage and are thinking about all the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career?” Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.”
He said the message that women could find just as much, if not more, fulfillment outside of being a housewife is a diabolical lie.
Needless to say, Butker is facing an immense amount of backlash for his comments, which also include comments against the acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community. One former Kansas City official even felt compelled to release a statement saying that Butker does not represent the city’s views, nor has he ever.
