After addressing early Sunday morning, the New York Jets have now officially announced Justin Fields is their starting quarterback for the 2025 NFL season. The Jets GM Darren Mougey put any concerns of competition in training camp to bed, stating that Fields is QB1.
“He is the starter,” Mougey stated during a press conference. “But Tyrod Taylor is going to be on his heels. Tyrod’s a pro’s pro. So really, it’s gonna be a great asset for Justin in the quarterback room.”

No QB Controversy in New York
This offseason, the Jets signed Fields to a two-year, $40 million contract, with $30 million guaranteed, showing Fields is more than just a bridge to something better. Though backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor is a seasoned veteran with 14 years of experience and 58 career starts, Mougey confirmed that there will be no competition for the starting job.
However, Mougey did hint that Taylor would be ready if needed.
“If Fields slips up once the games are real, Taylor will be right there behind him. Just in case.”
The Jets Believe in Justin Fields’ Potential
Now in his fifth NFL season, Fields is still considered a player with untapped potential. After stints with Chicago, he was sent to Pittsburgh, where he started six games after an injured Russell Wilson was sidelined for the first part of the season. His solid performances with the Steelers earned him the Jets’ place as their new starter.
“We believe Justin is the starter,” Mougey emphasized. “We believe in Justin. We believe we can win with Justin, so we’re excited about Justin’s potential.”

What’s Next for Justin Fields and the Jets?
While Fields has been named the starter, questions remain about whether he is the future answer at quarterback. The Jets hold the seventh pick in the upcoming draft, and Mougey did not rule out evaluating quarterbacks in the class.
“We’ll evaluate—just like any position. We’re gonna evaluate the quarterbacks, the entire class,” Mougey explained. “That’s the same for every position. It doesn’t change our approach.”
For now, though, it’s clear—the Jets are committed to Justin Fields, and he will lead the team into the 2025 season.
