Perhaps the NFL’s most controversial quarterback battle has just gotten much more interesting. While all signs have been pointing to Russell Wilson being the Pittsburgh Steelers starter at quarterback to begin this upcoming year. However, the veteran Super Bowl winner ran into an injury issue that may affect how training camp will go.
Russell Wilson Suffers Calf Injury, Justin Fields Takes First Team Reps
The head coach for the team Mike Tomlin told the media that Wilson apparently woke up with a calf issue, and that for now, Fields will be taking the first team reps while Wilson is day to day to return to that role. This will be the perfect time for Fields to get reps with the first team and show the coaching staff that he should be the starter.
Wilson is looking to make huge comeback in his career after a terrible time with the Denver Broncos that ended brutally. Russ never saw eye to eye with their head coach Sean Payton, and the team was willing to suffer a massive cap hit just to get Wilson off the team.
While Wilson has proven that he can lead a team to a Super Bowl win, however it could be noted that that team had literally one of the best defenses ever. Fields on the other hand, was sent to Pittsburgh for almost nothing after the Chicago Bears got the No. 1 pick and will look to change directions with Caleb Williams. While Fields has been inconsistent, he has shown flashes of being a starter in the league.
NFL Fans React To The Injury News
As both of these quarterbacks are looking to establish themselves as the starters in Pittsburgh, fans are trying to keep calm as they now this will go back and forth a bunch of times before the season starts.
“please remain calm..keep hands and feet inside the ride at all times,” said one fan.
“Trust me… when you wake up with [expletive] wrong with you, that wasn’t wrong with you before, and all you did was sleep. It’s time to try to find a desk lol,” said another fan.
“Takeover Justin! Win the job go off,” said another fan that wants to see Fields get the starting job.
“Mr. Unlimited already limited,” one fan joked about Wilson.
“And so it begins,” said another fan.
Fields is still just 25 years old and the future is all in front of him. He will undoubtedly get an opportunity in the near future and it will be up to him if he can take advantage of it. Mike Tomlin is one of the best coaches in the NFL, and if anyone can get Fields going it’s him.
We will have to wait and see who will establish themselves as the starter in Pittsburgh, but at the moment it seems like it is Russell’s job to lose.
