Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts gave an update on his hand injury following the team’s loss to the New York Giants Sunday. Hurts injured his hand in the second quarter and had to go to the medical tent.
Hurts returned to the game following his evaluation by medical staff but was benched with the rest of the Eagles starters when the Giants took a 24-0 lead. Hurts was one of several key players who suffered injuries Sunday.
Wide receiver A.J. Brown left the game with a knee injury. His injury is not considered severe, but then again, the Eagles said that about DeVonta Smith last week before ruling him out against the Giants. Safety Sydney Brown is believed to have torn an ACL.
Hurts isn’t sure when he’ll play for the Philadelphia Eagles again
That’s not good for the Eagles before their matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card round next week. Hurts update following the game wasn’t promising either.
According to EJ Smith with The Philadelphia Inquirer, Smith called his injury “unfortunate”:
“It’s a very unfortunate, crazy thing,” Hurts said. “I’ve never experienced anything like that.”
“It popped out.”
Head coach Nick Sirianni and Hurts are unsure if Hurts will get the start for the Eagles against the Buccaneers in the Wild Card round:
When asked about Hurts’ status for the upcoming game in Tampa Bay, Sirianni pointed to Hurts’ returning after the injury Sunday but was non-committal.
“He came back in and played, he’s tough as heck,” Sirianni said. “After he got hurt, he came back in [and] ripped it. So, yeah, we’ll see. I haven’t even talked to the trainers yet, or the medical staff. We’ll see.”
Hurts was similarly unequivocal about his status for the postseason.
“I’m taking it day by day at this point.”
Eagles backup quarterback Marcus Mariota went 13/20 passing for 148 yards, one touchdown, and one interception when he went into Sunday’s game after Hurts was benched. If Hurts cannot play the Buccaneers, the Eagles matchup would feature Mariota against Baker Mayfield.
Regardless of who the Eagles play at quarterback next weekend, they’ll need a healthy Brown and Smith available to play. Or it will be a short playoff stint for the Eagles.
