The Houston Texans have surprised many people this season thanks to the play of rookie quarterback CJ Stroud. The rookie out of Ohio State has been asked to throw the ball a lot and has made the most of his limited weapons. In week 5, Stroud set an NFL record for most passes to start a career without throwing an interception.
Houston Texans CJ Stroud Sets NFL Record
Dak Prescott held the record at 176 attempts in 2016. Stroud now has 186 attempts to start his career and a ball has not been caught by the opposing team. Stroud called the record “special” and it clearly means a lot to him.
“It’s cool. I got close a couple of times. Those DBs are really good. It’s important to take care of the football. I don’t think I’ve put it in harm’s way too many times. I just want to let our offense know and let my coach know they can trust me with the football, because turning the ball over is a recipe to lose.”
Stroud knows that taking care of the football is the key to winning in this league. So often, rookie quarterbacks come in and the speed of the game surprises them. This leads to some bad picks but Stroud is doing a great job taking care of the ball.
A Bright Future In Houston
Even though they lost to the Falcons today, the future is starting to look bright in Houston. It isn’t just Stroud. The defense has looked good under DeMeco Ryans and they have been competitive in all of their games. This is what you want to see out of a rebuilding team. It is likely that the Texans still finish the season with a losing record. However, this team has shown enough promise that as these young players continue to develop, Houston could become a major player in the AFC South.
CJ Stroud looks like the right pick for the Texans. Any time a player can set an NFL record in their first five games it is a plus. This team is fun to watch and finally has a bright future.
