On Friday, the Cincinnati Bengals signed a wide receiver to the roster following another day of practice that Ja’Marr Chase did not participate in. The Bengals’ star receiver has been with the team during training camp but has not participated in any of their three practices.
Ja’Marr Chase has sat out of practice this week

There has been speculation about why Chase might miss out on practices. Chase wants a contract extension from the Bengals. If Chase had a minor injury, he might not want to risk making the situation worse before signing a new deal. He could also be choosing to participate in a hold-in until he gets a new deal.
Or maybe none of the above.
The Cincinnati Bengals have a plan

On Wednesday, head coach Zac Taylor said he planned to ease a few of his key players into practice this week.
“Early on, we’re going to let a lot of these young guys get their reps, get their feet wet,” Taylor said. “So I’ve got a plan for Ja’Marr, a plan for Tee. I’ve done a great job of communicating with those guys. So you’ll see Ja’Marr limited [Wednesday], not doing much. Tee, [Thursday], not doing much.
“We’ve got a plan for Burrow, a guy coming off an injury, who’s great, healthy. But we’re trying to be proactive early in camp, like I mentioned the other day. Those guys will each have their time where they’re minimized, and other guys get the opportunity.”
Hakeem Butler signed with the Bengals

While Chase watches practice, another wide receiver will get an opportunity in training camp. Per a statement by the Bengals, Hakeem Butler signed with the team on Friday:
Butler (6-5, 227), a second-year player out of Iowa State University, originally was a fourth-round draft pick of Arizona in 2019. He spent his rookie season with the Cardinals on the Reserve/Injured list, then was on the Philadelphia Eagles’ roster during the 2020 campaign and played in two games (no statistics). He was not with an NFL team during the 2021-23 regular seasons.
Butler has an uphill battle to make the practice squad, let alone the 53-man roster. However, his presence will help a quarterback roster that needs receivers to throw to this preseason while Tee Higgins and Chase work through their “plan” with Taylor.
