The Denver Broncos will have a new quarterback for the 2024 season after letting go of Russell Wilson who signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason. The team took a very low risk chance when they traded for the New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson. Now, head coach Sean Payton revealed why they went after him, and even shockingly stated that he may be the starter for the team in week 1.

Coach Payton, when speaking with the media after OTAs on Tuesday, explained what the thought process was behind making the trade for Wilson and drafting a young prospect in Bo Nix. They decided to take a shot on the No. 2 pick because there really was nothing to lose according to Payton:
Speaking to reporters at OTAs last Tuesday, the head explained why the Broncos decided to take a shot on the No. 2 overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.
“We just felt like, man, we’d love to work with this guy,” Payton said, via Andrew Mason of DenverSports.com. “It wasn’t too long ago we remember grading him, and we felt the investment was worth it relative to his skillset and his talent.”
The coach revealed that is took over a month to get the deal done with the Jets, and Denver ended up sending the No. 203 pick of the draft to New York, for Wilson and the No. 256 pick. The team took guard Nick Gargiulo with that pick.
Wilson did not have much trade value after never really showing a great skill set in all of his starts with the Jets. Payton however, thinks Wilson may be the week 1 starter if Nix is not ready to take on the NFL. While no one expected Wilson to start games again, the Broncos do not have a legitimate QB1. The quarterback room features Wilson and Nix in addition to Jarret Stidham, so Wilson will have a real chance to start early.
We will have to wait and see who will be taking the No. 1 reps with the first team come minicamp, but at the moment their seems to be a real quarterback competition brewing in Denver.
