The Dallas Cowboys announced they signed USFL MVP KaVontae Turpin. To make room for him on the 90-man training camp roster, the organization released fullback Nick Ralston.
Turpin provides depth in the wide receiver position but could be most useful in the return game. The former TCU athlete looks to make his first NFL team.
A Look at KaVontae Turpin
The wide receiver played four years at TCU. The former Horned Frog caught 145 passes for 1,748 yards and added 13 touchdowns. He finished his collegiate career with First-Team All-Big 12 honors as a kick and punt returner.
Turpin went undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft due to concerns off the field. After playing in the Fan Controlled League and Spring League, the New Jersey Generals drafted the wide receiver.
In his first season in the USFL, he compiled a league-high 540 yards on 44 receptions and four TDs. The 5-foot-9 athlete added 129 rushing yards on 23 carries. He dominated the return game, leading the USFL in yards per punt return (15.3) and scoring the only punt-return TD. Turpin won league MVP for his phenomenal year.

What Will KaVontae Turpin’s Role For Dallas Be?

The wide receiver room features CeeDee Lamb, Michael Gallup (currently on the PUP list), James Washington, Jalen Tolbert, and more. Turpin will compete with others to earn a spot on the WR depth chart.
With Lamb’s upgrade to No. 1 receiver, it is doubtful he will remain the team’s punt returner. The door is open for KaVontae Turpin to fill the kick/punt return role. The Cowboys ranked 27th in kick returning and 13th in punt returning in the NFL. Turpin can provide a boost for the special teams unit and make an impact if he shows out in training camp.
