The Dallas Cowboys do not seem to be in a good place in regard to their contract extension talks with All-Pro wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. Talks, of course, have been ongoing for months as Dallas tries to find a way to pay Lamb as well as quarterback Dak Prescott and linebacker Micah Parsons. Unfortunately for the Cowboys, Lamb has been holding out from training camp until his new deal is done.
Recently, owner Jerry Jones ruffled some feathers by saying that he does not feel like there is any urgency to get a contract extension done with Lamb, despite the fact that preseason games have already started.
Lamb’s response to Jones’ comments was a simple post on social media that read, “lol.” This has led many to believe that negotiations are not going well, will only get worse, and that Lamb could eventually demand a trade.
Dallas Cowboys Wide Receiver CeeDee Lamb Is Not the Only Player Holding Out
One the Cowboys’ biggest rivals in the NFC, the San Francisco 49ers, are also having trouble in their contract negotiations with one of their best wide receivers. Brandon Aiyuk made it known from the very beginning of the offseason that he would not play for the 49ers again unless he had a new contract.
Aiyuk and San Francisco have been locked in contract extension talks for months, but no ground has gained by either side. Recently, the 49ers gave Aiyuk permission to negotiate contract extensions with other teams as he had formerly requested a trade.
Since that time, reports have stated that the Second Team All-Pro has rejected offers from the New England Patriots and Cleveland Browns.
It has also been reported that the 49ers have renewed their own contract talks with Aiyuk in an effort to keep him.
While no one knows why the soap opera will end in San Francisco, it is now common knowledge that the Patriots are interested in top-tier talent at wide receiver.
Could the Dallas Cowboys Trade CeeDee Lamb to the New England Patriots?
The Patriots’ offer to Aiyuk was for $32 million a year. If Lamb were to demand a trade from the Cowboys, it stands to reason that Dallas would look to New England as a potential destination due to their willingness to spend.
This is exactly what Maurice Moton of Bleacher Report thought when he named the Patriots as one of five teams who could potentially land Lamb via trade:
Cowboys receive: 2025 first-round pick, 2025 third-round pick, 2026 third-rounder, Javon Baker
Patriots receive: CeeDee Lamb
“Because the Patriots are offering a wide receiver with a blank resume, they would likely have to add a little more in their trade package in comparison to the other teams,” Moton wrote. “New England could toss in a 2026 second-rounder to draw the Cowboys’ interest.”
He continued, “In this trade scenario, Dallas would take a big risk, but perhaps the team strongly believes Tolbert blossoms into a key playmaker while Brandin Cooks and budding third-year tight end Jake Ferguson round out a solid pass-catching trio.”
The added bonus of trading Lamb, of course, is the increased ability to throw money at Prescott and Parsons.
