After being eliminated by the Green Bay Packers in the playoffs, the Dallas Cowboys could use a fresh start next season if they hope to contend. The thing is, the same can be said too for Michael Gallup if the wide receiver wants to play better later this year.
All throughout the regular season, the Cowboys showed how dominant they were. This can be seen at the end of the regular season when Dallas finished on top of the NFC East division with a 12-5 record.
That all changed, though, when they met the Green Bay Packers in the wild card round and got eliminated by them. This surprising loss from the Jordan Love-led squad took the NFL by surprise, which may lead to certain changes made to the Cowboys’ roster.
Dallas Cowboys Wide Receiver Michael Gallup Among NFL Stars Better Off Playing For a New Team
Among the projected changes is letting Michael Gallup and his $57.5 million contract go in the offseason. Todd Archer explains more in his article for ESPN:
“The Cowboys signed Gallup to a five-year, $57.5 million deal in 2022, knowing he was coming off a torn anterior cruciate ligament, but it hasn’t worked out. He caught 39 passes in 2022 and 34 passes in 2023, when his health was no longer a problem. The Cowboys are looking at a deal that would make CeeDee Lamb one of the highest-paid receivers this offseason and will need all the cap room they can get.
On the fifth day of the league year, $4 million of Gallup’s $8.5 million base salary becomes guaranteed, so a decision on his future will need to be made quickly. The one tricky part: Gallup had his first 100-yard game since the knee injury in the playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers. Would that provide enough promise to keep him?” Archer wrote.
Since Gallup hasn’t lived up to the contract Dallas gave him, it only makes sense to let him go before the upcoming season starts. In doing so, both Dallas and the wide receiver can become better in their own right.
