Despite the relentless barrage from the mainstream media, the Dallas Cowboys boast a franchise quarterback in Dak Prescott. However, Dallas has struggled to live up to their annual hype for the last two decades, and the noise surrounding the team’s shortcomings is getting louder each season. It’s not just the endless chatter from pundits like ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith that revel in Dallas’ misfortunes, but social media platforms are swamped with anti-Cowboys sentiment the moment they stumble on the grandest stage.
The Cowboys have been generous in providing ammunition to critics over the years, going 1-3 in the postseason since 2021 despite three consecutive 12-win seasons. Yet, quarterback Dak Prescott has been a beacon of hope for Dallas despite struggling to match or exceed expectations.
Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott: Looking For New Mega-Deal
Prescott is entering the final year of a four-year, $160 million contract, recently saying he is ready to be a “gambling man” this year when it comes to breaking the bank for a new deal. On Thursday, the quarterback market reset, with Jacksonville Jaguars signal-caller Trevor Lawrence inking a five-year, $275 million contract with the AFC South club. Prescott will now undoubtedly demand at least $60 million in annual salary, and the Cowboys would be foolish not to pay him every penny.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Dallas Cowboys gunslinger Dak Prescott is in line to become the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL. On NFL Network’s The Insiders on Thursday night, he spoke on the possibility of Prescott making $60 million annually after signing his new contract.
“Is it possible Dak Prescott gets $60 million if Trevor Lawrence and Joe Burrow are getting $55 [million] and Dak has all the leverage and a huge number next year if they franchise him, which they can’t? $60 million now becomes legitimately possible. Whether the Cowboys end up trying somehow some way to do something for Dak, whether he just simply plays it out, crushes it, goes to the free agent market – the number 60, as in $60 million, is no longer crazy. It’s now pretty real,” said Rapoport
If Dallas opts to pass on signing Prescott to a lucrative new deal, he will have no shortage of suitors in free agency, and rightfully so. Prescott should have probably been the NFL MVP last season after throwing for a league-best 36 passing touchdowns on 4,516 yards and just nine interceptions. Prescott has helped Dallas post the top-scoring offense in the NFL in two of the last three seasons and has posted a quarterback rating north of 104 in three of his eight professional seasons.
Although often criticized for his inability to attend big games, Prescott has orchestrated 22 game-winning drives in 114 starts while owning a 73-41 record. In a world where Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson, and Trevor Lawrence have similar or lesser resumes than Prescott, Dallas shouldn’t shy away from signing their franchise quarterback.
Current QB Market
As of mid-June, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow and Jacksonville Jaguars signal-caller Trevor Lawrence make a league-best $55 million average salary after signing new deals this offseason. Burrow, when healthy rivals Buffalo Bills passer Josh Allen as one of the best quarterbacks outside of Kansas City Chiefs megastar Patrick Mahomes. Meanwhile, Detroit Lions star Jared Goff will make $53 million annually after signing a contract extension this summer.
Outside Dallas Cowboys offensive leader Dak Prescott, Green Bay Packers budding star Jordan Love has his current contract ending after this season. Love had a fantastic 2023 campaign, throwing for 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.
