The Dallas Cowboys and owner Jerry Jones have been at the forefront of contract news for the better part of the 2024 offseason.
Now that they’ve gotten a deal done with star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, all of that contract attention is now directed at star quarterback Dak Prescott.
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is avoiding Dak Prescott’s contract
Jones, unlike the majority of owners in the NFL, typically addresses the media in the same way a general manager would. In this instance, Jones was on a radio show when he was asked about a potential new contract for Prescott.
Jones responded by outright refusing to discuss the contract at all, giving way to a continuation of upset Dallas fans who just want to see one of their favorite players get paid.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on @1053thefan: “I won’t be discussing anything at all about Dak (Prescott’s) business or contract at this particular time.”

Regardless of whether it’s with the Cowboys, Prescott is poised to become one of the highest-paid players in the history of the NFL when he gets his new contract.
He will be a free agent in 2025 after the conclusion of the 2024 season if the Cowboys decide they don’t want to keep him around. Jones explained he thinks the Cowboys can afford to make Prescott the highest-paid player in the league, but he outlined what makes it difficult in an article from Yardbarker.
“We have the challenge of not only recouping what we have spent on him over the last four years,” Jones added about Prescott, “we’ve gotta add that to what we’re gonna be paying him for the future. That’s not Dak’s problem on the end that it’s the Dallas Cowboys’ problem, because that money is not going to be there to spend on supporting cast. So we gotta ask ourselves, can we have the kind of success that Dak deserves, we deserve, his teammates deserve, our fans deserve? Can we do that and get in the range to afford Dak? I think we can.”
Salary costs only continue to rise as time goes on so if Jones and the Cowboys want to keep Prescott around, they could be costing themselves more money by waiting to get the deal done.
