The Miami Dolphins have been one of the busiest teams this offseason. That is because they have locked down several key offensive players plus their head coach for the next several years. Now, one big defensive player joins this group just two days before the Dolphins’ 2024 NFL season begins.
Who is it? What does his contract look like? Read below to find out.
Miami Dolphins Extend CB Jalen Ramsey
According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Miami Dolphins and CB Jalen Ramsey have agreed to a contract extension. So, what does this extension look like? Rapoport revealed that the Dolphins plan to pay Ramsey $72.3 million over the next three years. Of that $72.3 million, about $55.3 million will be guaranteed.
As mentioned above, this extension comes just two days before the Dolphins’ first game of the 2024 NFL season. Originally, Ramsey was only supposed to make $1.2 million in base salary this season. An important note is that he received a contract restructure bonus of nearly $25 million.
Taking the Crown Back
Jalen Ramsey is widely regarded as one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL. However, someone recently took the crown for the highest-paid CB in the NFL. That CB was Patrick Surtain of the Denver Broncos.
Right now, he has a contract that averages out to $24 million annually. Ramsey’s new contract will average out slightly higher annually, $24.1 million to be exact.
Miami Dolphins Locking Down Key Pieces
As mentioned above, the Miami Dolphins have been busy this offseason. Jalen Ramsey is far from the only key piece to receive a big payday before the start of the 2024 NFL season. So, who else is he joining?
Star WR Jaylen Waddle kicked things off by receiving a massive contract extension that was worth nearly $85 million. Then, there was wide speculation as to whether other key offensive players would join Waddle with a big pay raise.
Well, QB Tua Tagovailoa ended up being one of several quarterbacks to receive such a pay raise. His was worth about $212 million over the next four years.
Finally, we have Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel. He signed a 4-year contract when he first got hired by the team in 2022. As a result, his original contract was supposed to end after 2025. Now, his latest contract extension will keep him with the team through the 2028 season. It is safe to say the Dolphins believe they have found their core.
