The Philadelphia Eagles have a lot of things to do in the 2024 offseason if they want to make another run for the Super Bowl. Their collapse during the final half of the 2023 season saw the team whimper out of the playoffs with a defeat at the hands of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Everyone in the organization understands that something has to change, and one of the areas where impact can immediately be felt on the field is through personnel. However, the team’s salary cap situation will not make it easy for GM Howie Roseman to make sweeping roster changes.
This piece will look into the current cap situation of the Philadelphia Eagles and what they can do to build a competitive football team while needling through a restrictive salary cap.
What should the Philadelphia Eagles do to transform their roster?
According to PhillyVoice’s Jimmy Kempski, the team has around $16 million in effective cap space. While that is considerable money, it’s not enough to bring on a game-changer on either side of the ball. However, that issue can easily be addressed by releasing Kevin Byard.
The strong safety will leave a $14 million-sized dent on their roster, and his paltry performance in 2023 (one interception, three pass deflections, and 50 solo tackles in ten games) makes him a no-brainer of a cut.
Another area the Eagles can look into to free up more cap space is by restructuring Haason Reddick’s contract. The OLB was a crucial fixture for the Philadelphia Eagles defensive line, recording 11 sacks, 29 solo tackles, and 12 TFLs in 17 starts.
If the two camps can agree on terms that would allow for more cap space this season, they can target impact players in free agency that would help the Philadelphia Eagles thrive in the long run.
The only other option for Roseman and head coach Nick Siriani is to find talented secondary players in the draft. They ranked 31st in allowed passing yards (4296) and passing touchdowns (35), with most of these yards ceded in their late-season collapse.
They are linked to Alabama’s Terrion Arnold, but there is a wealth of defensive talent in the latter rounds that can turn into impact players for the Eagles this season and beyond.
Regardless of what Rosemand and the Philadelphia Eagles decide to do in the offseason, what’s sure is that the team needs to overhaul their roster to avoid a repeat of their disappointing second-half stretch.
