During the 2023 offseason, the Colorado football program went from afterthought to must-watch TV, hiring former NFL megastar and Hall of Fame defensive back Deion Sanders. After posting a 27-6 record with the Jackson State Tigers from 2020 to 2022, the Pro Football and College Football Hall of Fame honoree darted for the Colorado Buffaloes vacancy, overhauling the roster via the transfer portal. His sons, quarterback Shedeur Sanders and safety Shilo Sanders, joined the elder Sanders in Boulder, Colorado.
Since their arrival two offseasons ago, Colorado has been one of the most talked about programs in the country, with the team having no shortage of personalities, high-end stars, and primetime matchups. Being the son of six-time All-Pro corner Deion Sanders and an African-American quarterback, the younger Sanders believes he is judged differently from his peers.
Colorado Football QB Shedeur Sanders Speaks on Being Coach Prime’s Son, African-American Signal-Caller
In a sitdown with former ESPN employee and NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III, Colorado football star Shedeur Sanders spoke about how fans, players, coaches, and experts judge him differently than most:
I just accept the reality with everything and just not just being his son, just being an African American quarterback. That’s a double whammy right there because we both have different flashes of him in how we are as people. I’m more into cars, jewelry, and the flashy stuff…but that persona you may see that’s not really who I am. I’m just a normal guy. I just like nice things. Some people can take that offensively, though. Then, being an African American quarterback, it’s not many that do that… it’s a strict, narrow line you gotta walk down and be a certain way.
Shedeur Sanders disclosed his experience as an African American quarterback and son of program head coach Deion Sanders, calling it a “double whammy.” The signal-caller considers it a challenge to play the quarterback position as an African American, believing there is little room for error regarding how he handles his business on and off the field.
A senior, Shedeur Sanders played his first two seasons at Jackson State, throwing for 70 touchdowns against 14 interceptions. Sanders followed his dad, Deion Sanders, to Colorado in 2022, going 298-of-430 for 3,230 yards, 27 touchdowns, and three picks. He is off to another stellar star this season, throwing for 999 yards and nine touchdowns through three games.
