Pittsburgh Steelers: 2 Former Aaron Rodgers Packers Teammates Named as Possible Trade Targets Ahead of 2025 NFL Season

The Pittsburgh Steelers are hopeful that they have a much better offense in 2025 compared to the one they put out on the field in 2024. Last season, led by quarterbacks Justin Fields and Russell Wilson, the Steelers finished 25th in the NFL in total yards per game (319.4), 27th in passing yards per game (192.0), and 16th in points scored per game (22.4).

Still, Pittsburgh was able to finish the season 10-7 on the strength of their defense, but were eliminated in the Wild Card round of the NFL Playoffs by the Baltimore Ravens. That being said, it was clear that they needed some massive upgrades on the offensive side of the ball.

The Pittsburgh Steelers Added Aaron Rodgers and DK Metcalf

As everyone now knows, Pittsburgh initially wanted to re-sign Fields to be their starting quarterback for the 2025 season and beyond. When he signed with the New York Jets, though, they turned their attention to Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams. However, they were unable to convince L.A. to trade their star quarterback.

With their two top options off the table, the Steelers set their sights on four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers. And while they waited months for him to decide on whether or not he even wanted to play this year, Pittsburgh made some changes at wide receiver.

First, they acquired and then extended two-time Pro Bowler DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks. Second, they traded controversial wideout George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys.

Eventually, of course, Rodgers did end up signing a one-year deal with Pittsburgh. With him and Metcalf in tow, the offense hopes to improve on their aforementioned numbers from last season.

That being said, they may need some more firepower if they really want to compete for a Super Bowl, and two of Rodgers’ former teammates on the Green Bay Packers have been named as possible trade targets.

Of course, one should not be surprised that a couple of Rodgers’ former teammates are among the names being tossed around as possible Pittsburgh trade targets. In a recent article for CBS Sports, NFL analyst Cody Benjamin suggested current Green Bay Packers wide receivers Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs could reunite with their former quarterback on the Steelers.

Watson, of course, is recovering from a torn ACL suffered in Week 18, but Benjamin argues he could be an in-season trade target, writing, “With both Matthew Golden and Savion Williams in line for significant roles as rookies, might the Packers be willing to sell Watson as he recovers from an ACL tear? Rodgers might have to wait until later in 2025 to reunite with the speedster as a result, but the potential for late-season fireworks might make the gamble worthwhile.”

Of Doubs, Benjamin writes, “Unlike Watson, Doubs is available to suit up right now, and though he’s taken turns in the spotlight as part of Green Bay’s crowded wide receiver room, his long-term future in Green Bay is also in question, not only because of 2025’s draft class but because of his previous discontentment over opportunities in Matt LaFleur’s offense.”

And while these two receivers may make sense in the context in which Benjamin places them, there are a couple of things that would keep Green Bay from trading either of them.

First, of all the players taken in the 2022 NFL Draft, Doubs is tied with Drake London for the most career touchdown receptions (15), and Watson, despite missing so many games with injury, is tied for the second-most (14).

Obviously, the fact that Watson is injured makes him a very unlikely trade target. But, as Benjamin points out, Doubs is healthy. The problem with any Doubs trade talk, though, is that, despite the reports of his discontent, he is Jordan Love’s favorite receiver.

Last season, Doubs finished third among Green Bay pass catchers in targets with 72. Jayden Reed led the team with 76 and Dontayvion Wicks had 75. But while Reed and Wicks both played all 17 games, Doubs played in 13.

He is, by far, the pass catcher Love has targeted the most.

All this to say, if Pittsburgh wants to add a former Rodgers teammate to their offense, they may have to look elsewhere.
