Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin has come a long way from where he was at this point in time last season when he was fighting for his life. Sure enough, he couldn’t help but reflect on everything that happened and his journey in order to return to the field.
Damar Hamlin’s Scary On-Field Accident With Buffalo Bills
To recall, it is in Week 17 of the 2022 season when Hamlin collapsed on the field while the Bills were playing the Bengals.
During the first quarter of the game, Hamlin collapsed on the field after tackling Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins. The Bills safety was quickly attended by medical personnel on the field and resuscitated, but after he got up, he fell once again. He was then taken by ambulance to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
The game was then postponed, with both teams emotional. It was definitely the right call, as it was impossible for the players to keep playing following the scary scene they just witnessed.
As for Hamlin, after he was brought to the hospital, his condition and health status was closely monitored. He was in critical condition when he was taken by ambulance, and the whole sports world united in praying for his safety and showing him support throughout.
Fortunately, days later after the incident, Hamlin showed incredible progress in his recovery. In the months that followed, Hamlin’s journey in his attempt to go back to the field has been well-documented.
While others would have probably leave the game of football after experiencing what he had to go through, Hamlin was different. Thanks to the support of the Bills as well, the 25-year-old was eventually able to get back on the field.
It took 10 months for Hamlin to recover, rest and return to the field, which he finally did in Week 4 of the 2023 season against the Miami Dolphins. While he had plenty of inactive labels in the campaign, there’s no denying that his comeback is one of the most memorable and heartwarming stories of the year.
Damar Hamlin Remembers Cardiac Arrest
The injury happened exactly one year ago on Tuesday. And to remember his journey, Damar Hamlin posted on Instagram where he shared photos and videos related to his accident.
On the post, which he captioned, “God’s Child … 1 year later,” Hamlin showed one photo from when he was in the hospital. It also included a video of him doing a video-call with his teammates while he was in recovery. Screenshots of tweets from Bo Jackson and Robert Griffin III were also included.

It’s definitely amazing to see Hamlin back and playing again. Hopefully, we get to see him feature in the playoffs as well, especially with the Buffalo Bills well in contention for a playoff spot entering Week 18.
Sure enough, that would be the perfect way to cap off what has been a year full of trials for Hamlin, but also one filled with positivity.
