The Kansas City Chiefs, who will make their 4th Super Bowl appearance in 5 years will take on the San Francsico 49ers in a 2020 rematch, but there will be a different quarterback under center for San Francisco this go around in Brock Purdy.
Brock Purdy Led the NFL in Passer Rating During Regular Season
Purdy has led the 49ers along with Head Coach Kyle Shanahan to the top seed in the NFC during the playoffs and their second Super Bowl in 4 years. Purdy had the highest passer rating of any other quarterback in the NFL during the regular season that played at least 5 games with a 113.0 grade. This will be his first ever Super Bowl appearance.
Purdy Has Been Labeled as a “Game Manager” By the Media
While Purdy has been selected as an MVP candidate and led San Francisco to the Super Bowl, he has caught slack in the media for having All-Pro weapons around him. Specifically former MVP Cam Newton calling him a “game manager”, which caught popularity and caused arguments around the media. Newton recently doubled down on the take after Purdy and San Francisco defeated the Detroit Lions in the NFC Championship.
“I never said Brock Purdy was trash. What I did say, was he is a game manager. That’s not hate. That’s just what I feel to be facts, but I still reserve the right to say this. To be labeled a game changer, you have to be the best player on the offensive side of the ball. And that’s not the case… I ain’t recanting sh*t.
Newton won the MVP award in 2015 and has definitely certified himself as a game changer in the NFL, but Purdy has led his team to the Super Bowl in his first 2 years after being selected with the last pick in the draft and multiple players have disagreed with the game manager take. Including the Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.
Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo’s Thoughts on Purdy and the Game Manager Drama
#Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo on Brock Purdy: “All (people) have to do is put the tape on. It’s not a quarterback that’s managing.”
— Jeremy Fowler (@JFowlerESPN) February 2, 2024
Spagnuolo is currently preparing for Purdy and his arsenal of weapons and had some words about the game manager drama that has surrounded Purdy and the NFL for weeks. Claiming that if people watch the tape, they can see “it’s not a quarterback that’s managing”.
Despite all of the criticism by the media and former players, Purdy will have the opportunity to silence all of them in this year’s Super Bowl which will take place at Allegiant Stadium on February 11th.
