If the Cleveland Browns are looking to shore up their tight end room, perhaps it’s a good time to start to check out Hunter Henry, who is a pending free agent. That is a scenario floated by Thomas Moore of Dawgs by Nature who thinks there’s a chance for Henry to carve out a role behind David Njoku in the Browns’ passing attack.
The Browns are set at the top of the tight end group with David Njoku, but could still use a reliable second option. Bryant has not consistently shown that he can be that in his four years, and while Akins has a connection with quarterback Deshaun Watson from their time with the Houston Texans, that may not be enough for the Browns to keep him around.
Henry checks off the veteran presence box that Akins currently occupies, while being a few years younger, and is more productive than Bryant, so there could be some interest on the Browns side in taking a look at him.
Hunter Henry as a Cleveland Browns Free Agency Target?
There was a time when Henry looked like he was going to make multiple Pro Bowl appearances. That’s a long time ago as injuries and poor offensive environment have caused his name to lose much of its luster. That being said, it is still not too late for Hunter to turn heads again.
There is no pressing need for the Cleveland Browns to add a tight end, as they still have Njoku. But it surely wouldn’t hurt the Browns much to try to improve their TE position. As mentioned, Jordan Akins and Harrison Bryant have not been impactful players for the Browns, albeit in limited roles.
Henry is coming off a six-touchdown 2023 campaign with the New England Patriots while coming up with 419 receiving yards on 42 catches and 61 targets while operating within an anemic offense that was 10th in the league in pass play percentage but 28th in passing yards per game and 31st in points per outing. Henry was a capable target for the Patriots, especially in the rare times their offense made it to the red zone. Four of his touchdowns came off of the five red-zone targets he received.
Henryk, who was taken by the San Diego Chargers in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft, has 3,853 receiving yards and 38 touchdowns in 103 games in the NFL, so far in his career.
