One weekend is all it took for offensive lineman Luke Burgess to commit to Appalachian State. This marks the third consecutive offensive lineman to sign on the dotted line to wear the Black and Gold. The other two commits were Garner Langlo transferring from Auburn and Andres Dewerk from Southern California.
Appalachian State Adds Three Transfer Linemen
Offensive Lineman Luke Burgess
As a true freshman last season, Burgess saw action in one game for the Louisville Cardinals and spent the rest of the season honing his craft and building muscle. In his senior season, Burgess was ranked the 44th-best offensive tackle and Indiana’s eighth-best player by 247Sports. Burgess also played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl and earned first-team Indiana 4A all-state honors.
In June of 2022, Burgess signed on to play for Louisville and former Appalachian State head coach Scott Satterfield and then re-committed to incoming coach Jeff Brohm in mid-December. Burgess had his pick of the litter and selected the Cardinals over 29 other options, including 25 P5 offers.
The connection to Appalachian State was simpler given a prior relationship between Burgess and Mountaineer offensive line coach Mike Cummings, who had recruited Burgess in 2022 when Cummings was leading the offensive line group at Central Michigan.
Offensive Lineman Garner Langlo
Garner Langlo is no stranger to the Appalachian State staff as he was heavily recruited by the Mountaineers while he was playing ball at Trinity Catholic High School in Ocala, FL. Langlo took a trip up the mountain and fell in love and gave the Mountaineers his commitment during his April 28-29 official visit.
In the 2021 signing class, Langlo was rated as a top-50 interior offensive lineman and Florida’s 91st-ranked senior by 247 Sports. Receiving over 27 offers including 16 P5 opportunities, Langlo committed to Auburn. Langlo maintained his commitment to Auburn as the program underwent a head coaching change from Gus Malzahn to Bryan Harsin, signing his letter of intent under interim head coach Kevin Steele.
Auburn saw coaching changes with Harsin being let go in October 2022 and replaced by Hugh Freeze and Langlo exited the newly led program shortly before last season began. Langlo was reportedly running with the second-team offensive line in fall camp. Only one of 18 signees from Auburn’s 2021 class remained with the program through last season.
Langlo has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
Offensive Lineman Andres Dewerk
Former Southern Cal lineman Andres Dewerk made his cross-country trip from April 30 to May 1 visiting The High Country and immediately signed on. Dewerk arrives as a graduate transfer and will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.
Dewerk’s high school letterman jacket was chock full of flair, as he was an all-state, all-region, and all-area selection as a two-way lineman at Los Gatos High School in San Jose, CA. Dewerk finished his high school career as the 120th-rated offensive lineman in the 2020 signing class and chose the USC Trojans over the UCLA Bruins.
Dewerk will be worked at multiple positions by App State offensive line coach Mike Cummings. After that, it’s all about putting him right in the right place. While it remains to be seen how he will fit in with the Mountaineer blocking scheme, Dewerk spent most of his time at USC as a guard.
